CONN TRUMPET SWEET RARE 8B 1936 GUSTAT SYMPHONY GRAND SWEET SILVER HAND POLISH COMPRESSON GREAT / ORGINAL CASE ORIGINAL MOUTHPIECE.

MILES TOOK LESSONS FROM THE GUY THIS TRUMPET WAS NAMED AFTER:
In 1939, on Davisā€˜ 13th birthday, his father got him a new trumpet, and he began playing in local bands. He would also start receiving lessons from Joseph Gustat, the principal trumpeter of the St. Louis Symphony OrchestraĀ 1920-1936).

THIS GUSTAT TRUMPET IS PRETTY RARE AND IN FANTASTIC SHAPE. THESE WERE MADE FROM 1932 TO 1940.
THIS ONE HAS SERIAL NUMBERĀ 311993 MADE 1936.

1 FRIST VALVE TRIGGER ON SLIDE FOR TUNING WORKING PERFECTLY.

2 THIRD SLIDE THROW RING POSITIONED UNDER. SLIDE VERY SMOOTH. I PUT A FEW SMALL RUBBER RINGS ON THE SLIDES TO KEEP THE MOTION QUIET. ALSO IT HAS A GOLD PLATED STOP SCREW ON THE SLIDE TO ADJUST YOUR THROW DISTANCE.

3Ā Ā THE COMPRESSION TESTS AND AIR TESTS WERE ALL GREAT.
NO SIDE PLAY IN THE VALVES. NO AIR ESCAPING WHEN I HELD DOWN THE 2 AND 3 VALVE AND I TOOK OFF EACH SLIDE PUTTING MY FINGER OVER THE OPENING ON THE BODY TO THE CORRESPONDING VALVE AND BLEW INTO THE LEAD PIPE.Ā  I DID NOT TAKE OFF THE FIRST SLIDE BECAUSE I DID NOT WANT TO DISSEMBLE THE TRIGGER. IT IS ADJUSTED PERFECTLY AND I WAS AFRAID TO PUT IT BACK TOGETHER.
HAHAHA ….

VALVE SERIAL NUMBERS MATCH THE TRUMPET SERIAL.Ā  ALL VALVES ACTION REALLY TIGHT AND FAST. NO PLAY ON THE VALVES WHEN YOU HOLD THE STEMS HALF WAY DOWN AND WIGGLE THEM !!

4 BELL HAS A NICE GOLD PLATE COATING ON INSIDE OF BELL. BELL NEVER DAMAGED.

5 NO DENTS ON THIS ONE I SEE VERY CLEAN.

6 FINISH I WOULD SAY AS CLOSE TO 100%.Ā  I HAND POLISHED HER ! I TRIED TO GET INTO ALL THE NOOKS AND CRANIES. YOU MIGHT GET THOSE AREAS A TAD BETTER SO I AM INCLUDING PRO POLISHING RAG TO HAVE IN YOUR CASE.

7 WHAT CONN SAID IN 1937 ( THANKS CRISTINE FROM CONN LOYALIST 9 THE SITE ISĀ  ( BEST ONE ON CONN )

> Notice the first slide trigger and the position of the third slide finger ring. The 8B Symphony Grand was built between 1932 and 1940. It had a #1Ā½ bore (0.458″), although in an interesting quirk, the first valve slide is a 0.480″ bore, a feature it shares with the (post-war) 2B New World Symphony and 28B Connstellation.

What Conn said in 1937:
The Symphony Grand 8B is newly designed for discriminating players in large symphonies and bands where big, powerful tone, scale of unusual flexibility, and just the right amount of resistance are paramount. Has a one-piece bell made of specially processed metal called C-17, an innovation bore taper and other features found on no other trumpet. Used by

Joseph Gustat, first chair, St.Louis Symphony

; Phil Napoleon, featured artist at NBC, New York; Herman Faberman, for over 10 years with Horlick’s A. and P. Gypsies, and also with Maxwell house Show Boat; Wm. Tong, radio celebrity and for six years first chair with Sousa; Charles Spivak, first trumpet with Ray Noble. Bb and A, medium bore, with or without trigger mechanism for first valve slide, Clickless Crysteel valves <

8 THIS THING WAS SO SHINNY THAT IT WAS HARD TO GET NON REFECTIVE SHOTS.Ā  SO ON THE ENGRAVING SHOTS THERE ARE SOME REFLECTIVE LINES THAT MAY LOOK LIKE SCRATCHES…THEY ARE REFECTIONS…THE FINISH IS AS SMOOTH AS BABIES aZZ HAHAĀ  FEATURING BURNISHED SILVER AND SATIN FINISH. RING AROUND BELL BOTTOM MIRROR LIKE BURNISHED SILVER AS WELL ON THE UPPER PARTS OF THE VALVES VERY TASTY. ALSO BURNISHED SILVER LOGO !

9 NICE ART DECO TYPE ENGRAVING

10 A NOTE ON JOE GUSTAT
The Black community had these trained people in their high schools, and something else that is interesting. This goes back to the St. Louis trumpet sound. There was a guy by the name of Joseph Gustat who was a trumpet player (he was Italian but he changed his name to German because it was the only way he could play in the symphony) and he had a music store (with his brother) and it didnā€™t matter who you were. If you were a musician you could come in there. He sold a mouthpiece called a Heym mouthpiece. During that period, most of the trumpet players, Black and White, used that mouthpiece.

11 ORIGINAL CASE NICE CONDITION NO ODOR ON CASE OR TRUMPET.
COMES WITH A PRECISION 4 MOUTHPIECE ( WHICH IS THE LONGER VERSION. CONN SITE RECOMENDS THE SHORT SHANK MOUTHPIECE VERSION OF THE PRECISION. ) THEY ARE OLDER ONES. SEE CONN LOYALIST FOR MORE INFO ON THE DIFFERENCE ETC. YOU MAY WANT TO LOOK FOR ONE OF THE OLDER PIECES COULD WORK EVEN BETTER WITH THIS TRUMPET THEN CONN LATER ONES WHICH STILL WORKS WELL.

I TRIED TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY TO DESCRIBE THE ITEM !!!!
